A/B testing involves showing two different versions (A and B) of a product or campaign to the same and similar user group to test their performance while maintaining accuracy; metrics such as conversion rate, click-through rate, or revenue reveal which version is more successful.
A/B culture is not limited to one-off tests; it involves making the process of hypothesis formulation, testing, analyzing results, and systematically applying the insights gained a continuous process throughout the organization. Thus, it moves away from decision-making and builds on data, lasting meaning, and repeatable results.
A/B testing (or split testing) is a comparison of two different versions (A and B) of a webpage, application, or advertisement. Half of the users are shown version “A” (control group), and the other half are shown version “B” with minor changes (experimental group).
Which version is more successful in achieving the defined goal (click-through rate, sales, registration, etc.) is analyzed using statistical data.

One of the key concepts of this advanced approach is the primary metric, also called the North Star Metric (NSM). The NSM is a single metric (or a small set of metrics) that summarizes the core value a product offers its customers and serves as a leading indicator of long-term revenue and success.
For example, a media streaming service might define its NSM as “time spent listening,” because this metric reflects deep user engagement and predicts subscription retention. A/B tests in these organizations are designed not only to increase enrollment but also to guide behaviors that directly affect NSM.

Multivariate testing (MVT) is an advanced experimental method in which multiple elements on a digital product or page are changed simultaneously to measure how all possible variations perform on users. In this testing approach, different components such as headline, image, CTA, and color are considered together, and the impact of each combination on metrics such as conversion, engagement, or revenue is statistically analyzed.
While A/B testing measures the effect of a single variable in isolation, MVT reveals the individual and interactive effects of multiple variables. This allows for the identification not only of the best-performing element but also of the best-working combination. However, because numerous variations are generated, achieving meaningful results requires high throughput and accurate experimental design. This method is generally used in mature experimental programs for deeper optimization and micro-improvements.
